Kevin Curley

In 2010-11, Curley made a return trip to the CC tournament after a one-year hiatus from the postseason. Curley also reached the 50-win plateau faster than any other coach in program history – and did it in dramatic fashion. In front of the home crowd on Jan. 19, 2011, the team drained a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime, where his squad defeated Gettysburg 67-65 in the mentor’s 93rd game on the Green Terror sideline.

In 2012-13, Curley etched another program first on his resume. After closing the regular season with back-to-back wins but missing out on the conference tournament on tiebreakers, the Green Terror was rewarded with the program’s first postseason berth. McDaniel received a bid into the ECAC South tournament, falling to top-seeded Albright in the opening round.

In 2013-14, Curley was once again named CC Coach of the Year after the squad matched the program’s record for wins in a season with 18 and advanced to the semifinals of both the CC and ECAC tournaments. The Green Terror defeated Muhlenberg 57-52 in the first round of the CC tournament to notch the program’s first postseason victory since 1961.

In 2014-15, it was another milestone for Curley. The mentor became the fourth coach to reach 100 wins with a 73-52 win over Ursinus on Dec. 6. He was the first such coach to reach triple digit wins with a winning record. McDaniel went on to earn a conference and third straight ECAC tournament berth.

Curley’s teams have also been recognized for success off the court. Following the 2012-13 season, his Green Terror team earned the Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award, presented by the referees who are members of the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association, for the second time in his tenure. The same squad also earned the National Association of Basketball Coaches inaugural Team Academic Excellence Award for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

While at Colgate, he coordinated the national recruiting effort as well as developing and maintaining contact with high school and AAU coaches. Directly responsible for guard development, he also organized the Raiders’ conditioning and weight training program, as well as coordinating individual student-athlete workouts. He also oversaw the staff’s compliance with NCAA rules.

During his time at Colgate, he assisted in other aspects of the program, including but not limited to recruiting, and game-day and practice planning and execution. For a time, he also managed the scouting of opponents and coordinated film-exchange agreements. In addition, he coordinated travel and meal arrangements.

During his time as a recruiter at Colgate, Curley helped bring in four All-Patriot League performers, five players named to the all-rookie team and three 1,000-point scorers.

Prior to his arrival in Upstate New York, he served four seasons as the assistant coach at Bethany (W.Va.). He started his coaching career in the State College Area School District while completing his bachelor degree at Penn State University.

While at Bethany, he served as Rob Clune’s assistant from 1994-98. On the Bison staff, Curley was part of the early stages of a turnaround in the program. He was primarily responsible for coordinating travel as well as scouting opponents, including film exchange and breakdown.

The last class that Curley helped recruit at Bethany went on to win the Presidents Athletic Conference twice and make the program's first trip to the NCAA tournament in more than 20 years. Two of the players on that team were named all-conference. Both were 1,000-point scorers, including one who was a two-time conference MVP and the Bison's all-time leading scorer with more than 2,000 points.

He developed and implemented a strength and conditioning program along with counseling and advising student-athletes in academic matters. He also served as Bethany’s junior varsity coach and camp director during his tenure.

A guard in college, Curley played two seasons at Penn State-Altoona, where he was captain his second season before heading to State College.

A 1994 industrial and labor relations graduate from Penn State, he served as the junior high boys’ basketball coach and varsity assistant at the State College Area School District.

After his undergraduate work, he went to West Virginia University, where he earned a master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic coaching in December 1996.

A State College, Pa., native, Curley comes from a family with a rich background in athletics.

His younger brother, Greg, played basketball at Allegheny College and is currently the head coach at Juniata. He has served the last 22 seasons in the head coaching role and has guided the Eagles to some of the program’s most successful seasons in recent history, including the first back-to-back winning seasons since the late 1980s.

Kevin is married with three children. His wife, Allison, gave birth to the couple’s first children, Caroline and Nathaniel, in February 2007 – just prior to the couple’s arrival in Westminster. The couple welcomed their third child, Gabriel, in December 2010.
